Through our tiny home community, we aim to:
Provide safe, affordable homes built on secure land
Reduce the risk of displacement caused by flooding and unsafe housing
Support elderly residents with accessible, low‑maintenance living
Lower utility costs through energy‑efficient design
Rebuild the neighbor‑helping‑neighbor spirit that has always been the heart of Appalachia
Create a community where families can heal, rebuild, and thrive
Our mission is simple but powerful: restore stability, restore dignity, and restore the Appalachian sense of belonging.
Appalachian Opportunity is a nonprofit organization committed to providing safe, stable, and affordable housing for families in Eastern Kentucky. Our tiny home community is designed to offer hope and dignity to those facing housing insecurity, while rebuilding the strong, close‑knit sense of community that has always defined Appalachian life.
Our founder, Michelle Brewer, is a Registered Nurse with a BSN who was born and raised in Eastern Kentucky. She grew up in a holler, just like so many of the families we serve today. Through her work in the emergency department, she has witnessed both the progress and the setbacks in our region — and she has seen firsthand the struggles that come from unsafe, unstable, or unaffordable housing. Her lived experience and deep Appalachian roots shape every part of this mission.
Appalachian Opportunity is truly a family‑rooted organization. Michelle’s husband and son serve alongside her as board members, bringing their own lifelong connection to Eastern Kentucky. Together, this family‑led board reflects generations of local experience, resilience, and commitment to helping our community rise. Our roots run deep here — and so does our dedication to serving the people of Appalachia.
OUR VISION
Our vision is to create a tiny home community where families can rebuild their lives with dignity, safety, and support. By combining affordable housing with the close‑knit, neighbor‑helping‑neighbor spirit that once defined Appalachian life, we aim to restore stability and connection for those who need it most.
We provide secure, affordable homes designed to give families a stable foundation.
Our tiny home village encourages connection, shared strength, and neighborly support.
Families gain the space, dignity, and hope needed to rebuild their lives.
ABOUT US
Appalachia’s mountains leave little safe land for housing, forcing many families into flood‑prone areas. After the 2022 flood, I saw how impossible it was to find clean, safe homes — and how losing everything broke people’s spirits. Our elderly struggle even more, facing homes they can’t maintain and utility costs they can’t afford. Appalachian Opportunity exists to change that by providing safe housing and restoring the close‑knit community support our region was built on.
